FP3: Evolving Security for 5G Cloud Deployments

SCOPE

As 5G radio access networks (RAN) and Core migrate to the cloud, it is important to assess the security posture.  The cloud introduces security advantages for 5G deployments, but it also expands the attack surface due dependency on cloud service providers, resource sharing with other tenants, increased risk of security misconfiguration, lateral movement, broader internal threat surface, and greater use of open-source software. Recent cyberattacks show the risk in the cloud due to evolving threats and attacks form internal and external threat actors. Cloud-based deployments must be realized with a strong security posture that takes a risk-based approach striving towards a zero trust architecture (ZTA) to ensure confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authenticity protection of network functions and data.
This panel brings together leading 5G cybersecurity experts from mobile network operators to discuss their insights for securing 5G RAN and Core cloud deployments.  Focus will be on securing 5G networks with key topics for discussion that include existing security standards, cloud security, zero-trust architectures, Open RAN security, and network slicing.

Scott Poretsky, Director of Security, Ericsson North America

Short Bio: Scott Poretsky is Ericsson North America’s Director for Security, Network Product Solutions focusing on securing 5G, Open RAN, and cloud deployments of critical infrastructure built upon a zero trust architecture.  He has over 25 years of industry experience in a variety of networking and security technologies. Scott is Ericsson’s voting member at the O-RAN Alliance’s WG11 – Security, where he is a rapporteur and active contributor to numerous security work items.  Scott is Ericsson’s delegate to FCC CSRIC 8 WG2 for Open RAN security and NSA ESF study group for Open RAN security.  He has represented Ericsson in other industry-government collaborative working groups including NSTAC Subcommittee for Communications Resilience, FCC CSRIC 7, and DHS CISA ICT SCRM.  Scott is currently serving as Co-Chair for the ATIS study group for 5G Zero Trust.  He is an IEEE Senior Member and is member of the Advisory Board for IEEE ComSoc’s technical committee for Communications Quality and Reliability (CQR).  Scott has one patent, numerous published papers and invited talks, and is a recipient of the Ericsson North America 2020 Gold Award for External Customer Satisfaction.  Scott is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) and holds an MSEE from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and BSEE from the University of Vermont.

Mike Loushine, Lead – Cybersecurity, AT&T Chief Security Office

Short Bio: Mike Loushine is a Cybersecurity Lead in the AT&T Chief Security Office. Mike develops cybersecurity mechanisms and platforms for mobility and enterprise systems. Mike has over three decades of experience in the communications industry within various engineering and research capacities. Mike currently serves as an AT&T delegate to the O-RAN Alliance Security Working Group and the 3GPP SA3 Security Working Group. Within these and other standards development organizations Mike works with mobile network operators and vendors to drive security into mobility standards and to establish industry-wide best practices. Mike regularly contributes to industry alliances focused on emerging cybersecurity requirements and solutions for 5G, Next G, and 6G systems. Mike joined AT&T six years ago after 17 years in the roles of Director, Chief Scientist, and Senior Scientist at Telcordia Applied Research and (then renamed) Applied Communication Sciences. Mike performed research in wireless communications technology including Wi-Fi positioning, 4G mobile networks, and security. His technical and business contributions were recognized with three CEO Awards. Mike earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (Communications Theory) from The George Washington University.

 

Wynn Fenwick, Security Architect, Telus

Short Bio:  Wynn is 5G prime for Canadian mobility operator TELUS, operating out of its Cybersecurity Architecture practice. A 27 year veteran of the cyber security industry, Wynn has been implementing cloud security since 2000, including solutions for cloud providers in Asia and Europe and for clients such as the US GSA, Canadian Departments of Public Safety, Health, Justice, Foreign Affairs, Public Works, and multinational MSSPs. Wynn has certified with Global Information Assurance (GIAC) in network Intrusion Analysis (GCIA), Assessing Wireless Networks (GAWN), Web Application Penetration Testing (GWAPT) and Incident Handling and Hacker Techniques (GCIH).  Whether it is embedding security to government virtualized hosting solutions, or guiding assurance programs for managed service providers, he drives tools and techniques integration into continuous improvement process that counter ever-changing threat models. Prior to joining TELUS, Wynn was Chief Technology Architect for an international Managed Security Services Provider.

 

Vishwa Ramamurthi, Distinguished Engineer, Verizon

Short Bio:  Vishwanath Ramamurthi (Vishwa) is a Distinguished Engineer in Verizon Technology Standards Planning team within Verizon’s Global Network and Technology organization. He currently represents Verizon in 3GPP RAN2/3, and O-RAN (Open RAN) Alliance. Vishwa has extensive experience in the wireless industry including at Verizon, Intel Labs, AT&T Labs, and Fujitsu. He takes keen interest in standards for Open RAN architecture/interfaces and has had a significant influence on 5G RAN architecture development. Vishwanath has a PhD in Electrical and Computer engineering from the University of California Davis, and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He has several papers and patents to his credit.

 

Guillaume Ferland, Distinguished Member of Technology, Bell Canada

Short Bio: As a Bell’s Distinguished Member of Technology, Guillaume leads the Se truth Architecture practice for Bell’s Network and Technology group designing security solutions that encompass all areas in Bell, including critical services such as 5G, 911, broadcast and many others. In his current role at Bell, Guillaume is heavily focused in container and cloud security, Identity and Access Management, as well as new areas such as MEC, cloudification of 5G, and security orchestration.  In his 18 years in the Cybersecurity industry, Guillaume has worked across multiple verticals, such as Banking, engineering and Managed services. He also sits on the Customer Advisory Board of multiple leading security companies.

 

Arash Obaidi, Industry Leader for Cybersecurity

Short Bio: Mr. Obaidi’s career and work experiences spans 24 years in telecommunications & software industry touching key aspects of secure silicon and products, secure software, secure networks and secure clouds. Mr. Obaidi has also served as Deputy Chair of the global standards body GSMA Device Security Group leading and partnering with key global MNOs & OEMs towards developing a secure product ecosystem. He holds Masters degrees in Software Engineering, MBA and recently finished his 3rd Masters degree in Cybersecurity. He has partnered with industry leaders such as Google on industry leading initiatives and continues to develop on those partnerships. Mr. Obaidi is also a prolific American inventor with 50+ US Patents Issued & 60+ Patents pending – including the industry impacting ‘Remote SIM Unlock’ and ‘Secure Lock’ for mobile devices amongst others. Mr. Obaidi’s work experiences includes working for Nokia, Virgin Mobile, T-Mobile & Kyocera Wireless focused in areas ranging from: Managing Cybersecurity Strategy & Architecture teams, leading Product Security innovations, developing Computer & Telecom Networks software and hardware equipment, Architecting & developing Secure Software for Real-Time Embedded Systems. As well as developing major Object Oriented Software Engineering programs. Mr. Obaidi has also engaged and led projects with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Labs in Silicon Valley as well as Academic partners – UC Berkeley. Mr. Obaidi has also worked in close collaboration on technology evaluations with DT Capital Partners in Israel & Europe. He is a pioneer in his field of secure computing platforms and secure resilient networks.
